Maha + Mrityun + Jaya

It unification of three hindi words, Maha- great, Mrityun- death and Jaya- victory; the one who victor the death. According to Hindu mythology, the mantra is also referred as Mrita-Sanjivini mantra because of its life-restoring practice.

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् ।

उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मा मृतात् ।।

Om Tryambakam Yajamahe, Sugandhim Pushti Vardhanam,

Urvarukamiva Bandhanan, Mrityormukshiya Mamratat.

Meaning:-

Om, We Worship the Three-Eyed One (Lord Shiva),Who is Fragrant (Spiritual Essence) and Who Nourishes all beings.May He severe our Bondage of Life like a severed from the bondage of its Creeper thus Liberate us from the Fear of Death, by making us realize that we are never separated from our Immortal Nature.

Mahamrityunjay Mantra is also called the 'Triyambakam Mantra' referring to 'the three eyed Rudra'. Lord Shiva is the deity of the Mahamrityunjay Mantra. He is considered to be the most powerful in the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh (Shiva). It is Shiva who gave a mantra as powerful as this for attaining siddhi, desired success and destroying enemies. Shiva is the Mrityunjaya - the conquerer of Death. Time destroys everything and He is the Ruler of Time. He is the destroyer of all evil, misery and pain.

Mahamrityunjay Mantra calms a person who is on his death bed and prepares him for the journey beyond death. Mahamrityunjay Mantra also helps in restoring confidence and building determination.

There is a protocol to chant this mantra. One must sit relax, with eyes closed and concentrating on your third eye, an area that lies behind the two eyes.
